La Tzoumaz - an Alpine secret
La Tzoumaz is one of the great secrets of the Alps. Located just one ski ride away from Verbier, this charming little village gives you all of the luxury that you would expect from one of Europe’s most popular ski resorts, only less expensive. What’s more, the great skiing around the region is if anything more accessible from La Tzoumaz than Verbier itself, making this the ideal resort for those on a budget or those looking to get a little extra luxury from their money.
The village was known up until recently as Mayens de Riddes and was left very much in the shadow of places like Verbier and Medran, so the new La Tzoumaz name was adopted to give the village a more authentic ski town-feel and establish its own market.
Great snow in the winter season
In comparison to Verbier the La Tzoumaz season tends be that little bit longer and has more good snow throughout, due to the fact that all of its slopes are north-facing. This does, however, have the drawback that during the winter season they do not see a massive amount of sunlight.
Four Valleys
La Tzoumaz has great access to all of the local Four Valleys region of over 400km of ski-runs between Verbier, Nendaz, Thyon and Bruson, so you won’t miss out on any of the action by making the town your base for the duration of your stay.
Ease of access
You can get to and from Geneva airport to La Tzoumaz around 30 minutes faster than it would take you to reach Verbier, so you can have the skis and goggles on and be hitting the piste that little bit quicker after landing.
Where to eat
This may be the smaller counterpart of Verbier, but that doesn’t mean that the cuisine available in the town will be of limited quality, quite the opposite in fact. Places like Auberge la Tzoumaz offer great local food and wine at very reasonable cost all in very comfortable surroundings. It is a very pleasant place to enjoy a relaxed evening meal after a long day on the slopes.
Night life
La Tzoumaz is most certainly a town better suited to quiet, cosy nights in than all-night parties. There are none of the open-til-dawn nightspots that there are in Verbier, but if a roaring fire and wonderful local wine are ideal companions for you to while away the evening, then La Tzoumaz is the place for you.
La Tzoumaz is most certainly one of the up and coming alpine holiday resorts, and would be a great base for any ski enthusiast to enjoy all of the superb slopes that are nearby. Don’t miss out!
