This lovely historic, attractive village with its traffic free centre and small narrow streets bustling with restaurants is full of character and retains a warm feeling of rural France and a great base for families. Located in the Haute Savoie at an altitude of 720 - 1600m offering virtually no queues on the slopes, this listed village renowned for its stonemasons ensures an abundance of pretty squares with medival fountains, rustic old buildings and an ancient church. Samoëns is the only summer and winter sports resort to have been named a 'Town of Artistic, Architectural and Historic Interest' by the Guides in the Heritage Department.
With a delightful valley setting and spectacular views from the top, the traditional resort of Samoens sits perfectly in the extensive and varied Grand Massif ski domain, the fifth largest ski area in France. The resort's 80% of north facing slopes results in a plentiful supply of snow throughout the season, ensuring the very best conditions for skiing and boarding, as well as providing one of the more challenging areas of the five Grand Massif mountain range.
With its 265 km of pistes (12% Green, 43% Blue, 34% Red and 11% Black), 77 lifts and skiing to 2480m, the five inter linked resorts of Morillon, Samoëns, Les Carroz, Sixt Fer à Cheval and Flaine make up the superb Grand Massif ski domain, currently considered as one of the largest, finest domains in France. With several ski schools offering tuition for skiers and boarders including kindergarten, for those advanced skiers desiring a challenge, the ski area in Samoëns includes plenty of spots that are a "must" including the Combe de Gers, Combe de Morillon or slopes of Vernant, while Heli skiing can also be arranged.
Samoëns has a whole range of non-skiing activities providing plenty of fun or relaxation including the thrills of tobogganing in an area covering more than 1,000m2 at Samoëns 1600m, Nordic walking, snowshoeing, dog sledding,snow mobiling, ice climbing, outdoor covered ice rink, cinema and a sports and cultural centre. And after a day's skiing, you can enjoy the warmth and charm of your second home in the unique ambiance of a typical unspoilt mountain village.
For the summer, Samoëns offers more than 900 kms of hiking and biking trails and 11 mountain huts. With rafting and paragliding to delight adrenalin junkies the Indiana Parc in Samoëns very close to the village centre, with its 140m flying fox allows you to choose between 6 trails, some of them suitable for children from the age of 4 upwards.
Thanks to its ease of access, Samoens literally just one hour from Geneva airport door to door, really does make the perfect location for your second home. With several airlines offering budget flights to Geneva, this is the perfect resort for your holidays as well as short weekend trips. By car Samoëns is about nine hours from Calais, with motorway all the way (apart from the last 12 miles 20 kms). For those wishing to use the train there are easy rail connections from Britain and the rest of Europe, linking to France's high speed TGV train service. The nearest station to Samoëns is 12 miles away at Cluses (www.sncf.com) and a shuttle coach service runs to Samoëns from Cluses SNCF railway station.
